What is a Half Mask?
Simply put a half mask is a mask covering the upper part of the face with holes cut in it for the eyes. The lower half of the mask is open allowing you to breathe and chat easily.
Half masks were made popular back in the 15th and 16th centuries by people attending masquerade balls, such as the carnival in Venice. These elaborate masks often had a stick attached allowing them to be held up over the face or lowered as required.
More recently venetian sttyle half masks were made popular again by films such as “Eyes Wide Shut” where wealthy hedonists used them to hide their identities.
On the back of this many people have started organising masked parties and balls in line with those held back in France and Italy many centuries before.
Half masks can also be contemporary in design, ranging from elaborate feather decorated items through to masks inspired by the movies such as batman or phantom of the opera.
